There are a few people and organisations that have helped me get this blog up and running, so I want to take the time to mention a little about them and link back to their sites.

Hosting & Design

I’ve used a few blog services but it wasn’t until I discovered Wordpress that I was truly happy with what I had. I love the customization, that I can use it on their website or my own, the ability to easily add widgets, the beautiful templates, and the amazing plugins that give me a blog that works how I want it to.

Honest Networks supply me with my webspace. It was a long time before I even considered paying for web hosting. It wasn’t until my free host at the time started up HN as a sister site that I finally took the plunge. I’ve been with them for the past few years and I’m really happy with their features, prices and helpful customer support. HN is one of the few companies that I feel truly value my custom and feedback.

1&1 is the company I purchase all my domains with, and I’ve had many domains over the years. The prices are good and I get everything I need - admittedly I don’t get many fancy extras, but I am pleased with the service and lack of problems I’ve have over the years. I don’t believe in fixing things that aren’t broken.

Runbox is my email provider and takes care of not just all of my personal mail but also any that are sent to this site. Emails that sent to me using my contact form, comments on my blog and uptime alerts go straight to my inbox so I am always aware of what is happening here, even if I’m not around.

Once every 30 minutes SiteUptime checks my website and alerts me if it goes down. Because of the gap in checking sometimes my site is down for a much shorter time, however it is a helpful tool to see what visitors are seeing. The link to see how gotothatsite.co.uk is doing is linked on the right hand sidebar near the bottom.

I decided early on I wanted a design that was friendly and wasn’t something I’d seen a dozen times before. I also needed it to be able to use widgets and wanted to try something with 3-columns. Eventually I found the template you see now, “Simplified Theme” by Just Skins. I love how it looks and can’t imagine replacing it now I have it as I want it.

Blog Plugins

Akismet is an excellent blog anti-spam tool. I find that it takes care of most of the comment and trackback spam that I receive.

Another useful anti-spam measure. This adds a word that must be typed by commenters to confirm they’re not a bot designed just to spam random blogs.

A very useful plugin that easily lets me backup and restore my blog database in case something goes wrong. The first thing I ever do before upgrading Wordpress versions is to back up my database.

I want my visitors to be able to contact me privately, but I don’t want my email harvested by spammers. This plugin lets me have a Contact Page that doesn’t give out my email address but allows others to get in touch with me.

Sitemaps are great for helping visitors get around a website, especially one they aren’t used to. I started to build my own when I found this great plugin that automatically generated one for me! You can see my Sitemap by clicking here.

When I decided I wanted a little more control over my RSS Feed, I opted for FeedBurner. The FeedBurner FeedSmith plugin redirects all feed traffic to my specific FeedBurner feed.

The Sociable plugin is a simple way to recommend a page or post to places such as StumbleUpon, Digg and many others besides. I selected my favourites (just look for the “Share and Enjoy” section) but there are plenty of others to choose from.

The name “Tag Suggest Thing” doesn’t do this plugin justice. This plugin searches through your blog post and suggests tags you can use, allowing you to easily click and add the ones that you want.

This plugin disables the NoFollow attribute on external links so when a comment is left search engines will follow the url. Without being technical this is a good thing for genuine commenters, and I am fairly confident my anti-spam measures will stop it applying to spammers (the reason NoFollow is activated in the first place).

Personal Thanks

To end, I would like to give a huge thank you to all my family and friends who encouraged me to keep working on this site. I’d also like to thank anyone who sent in a website to be reviewed or that have taken the time to read through or comment on anything on my blog.

Thank you all. :)
